🌙 — AO3 downtime
Mar. 2nd, 2026 06:15 pmSeeing a lot of people freaking out over the current AO3 outage. I think this is an argument against having it as a centralized host for anything fic or otherwise fanwork-related — don't get me wrong, I love AO3 and how accessible it's made fics, as well as its tagging system (considered to be on par with universities, last I read!) being the best there is out there for fandoms.
But having everything in one place is probably going to backfire on us all, sooner or later... Right? I heard that there are people actively pushing for censorship who want to take over the OTW, and even now I recall that there are already restrictions for anyone who wants to read/post on AO3 if they are from the US. In the worst-case scenario that pro-censorship people dream of, we won't even have AO3 as we know it now.
I guess this all got me thinking of making my own archive. I'm starting with backing up my fics here on DW, on
lunafleurette_writes. Last year, I did try to make my own Neocities site, but I didn't have the time to hunker down and actually learn it — but it's back on my to-do list again, even it may take me a long time. Lastly, I also already have a Squidgeworld account, so I'll work on transferring my stuff there for yet another safe storage. Having multiple backups really does feel like a great idea, you never know when a service or website you trust may become inhospitable one day.
Sometimes, it still amazes me that Fanfiction.net is still around, despite its current state... I was perhaps too young when it happened, but I heard fandom olds talk about how ffnet purged large swathes of fanfic for having smut. With how people are becoming more and more puritan and pro-censorship these days... Do you think we might see fic/art purges in the coming years?
